Keep on rocking in the free world!, not sure where that came from, well I do, obviously it's Neil Young, but it just popped into my head. Anyway, back to what I was going to type, not long back from Iceland, superb again, delivered on all levels. The weather was great, superb light, everyone melted there memory cards, didn't really see any rain, and we pretty much got everywhere we wanted to, excellent.

Well the Bluebells and wild flowers arrived eventually in places, not a super strong showing this year, I think the dry weather didn't help earlier in the year. Low down proved popular, even broke out the vintage lenses.
The shot below was taken with an old Canon 50mm lens from the 1960's, it's amazing what you can still pick up and make interesting images with.

Warmth is returning to the sun once more, the Bluebells and wildflowers are springing up, more opportunities for photography in the landscape. Not just the wide open vista but the intimate portrait is always welcome. It's great being close up with objects or flowers, shooting into the light, maybe even after rain, a perfect way to spend a Spring day.

The winter kicked back in and the landscape photography was at full throttle. Skye was superb, great images all over the island, you can see at times like this why its a magnet for photographers and artists.

The Isle of Arran was excellent, small in stature, big on adventure. What a superb landscape, mountains, fells, Lochs, Glens, waterfalls, otters, deer, eagles, all on one stunning Island.

Autumn colours have been a little hit and miss this season so far. Some amazing colours and then areas where it seems not to have appeared. It must be the dryness of the summer heatwave, still, there is plenty to be going on with for the lamdscape photographer.
September 2018
September brings the start of temperature changes overnight, cooler mornings which means some gorgeous mists to be photographed. Northing really beats that feeling of early morning cold in the autumn, breathing in the fresh air. Somehow it connects you closer to the ground you are standing on, waiting and watching the sun slowly emerge out of the horizon into the day.
August 2018
August always seems a gap in between the proper summer and the lead up to Autumn and winter. You can sense the anticipation building up as you talk to landscape photographers.However, I find the interest is in the challenge. There are superb splashes of colour out there, heather can be in full bloom in parts of the land, from Shropshire to the Peak District, its always worth an evening out waiting for that magic moment.
Summer and a heatwave, crikey, how good has the weather been for the U.K? Consistently warm, proper heat, which does make a change. The usuall challenges arrive in the summer for the landscape photographer. When all is green and the sun is high, where do you seek inspiration? well you could always forget the greenery and go black and white.
Not long back from Shetland, a wonderful place. Especially in sunshine, generally the temperature hovers around 12/13 but everyday was 16+, a heatwave on Sheltand. We did see a little rain but not much, plenty of wind but that is normal for these small islands out in the Northern Atlantic

A stunning sunrise at the Callanish Stones, never fails to shake the senses and connect closer with the earth. You certainly feel the sense of place in these ancient locations. Even when it's freezing, what the picture doesn't show is the wind, which was bitterly cold and biting the photography fingers.
Amazing weather for the whole week up in the Outer Hebrides, the south of the UK was bathed in...well..,rain, while we had sunshine throughout the week. With a few moody showers thrown in, pretty much to order, all made for great landscape photography! Nothing more to say really, it was superb.

The Outer Hebrides tour this year proved one of the best. We had great light for the group, each location providing a stunning backdrop to the images being made. Clear skies brought super views of the Milky Way and a spectacular showing of the Aurora Borealis, wow, is all you can say.

The Spring and Summer is whizzing by, from the Lakes to Spain, and then over to Denmark for a workshop, it's pretty much non stop. Images have been flying out of photographers camera's left right and centre, it just seems tricky to find the time for everyone to process any of them. More images to follow once they land in the Inbox.
Copenhagen was again fantastic, everyone shooting all hours of the day, we had great weather too. Super warm, almost too hot at one point, walking around the city pointing out images at nearly 30 degrees was thirsty work!:-) Even had to buy a hat!(see,below)

I could not let another day pass without reiterating the comments I made to you at this weeks Northumberland workshop. It exceeded my wildest expectations and I learnt more in the four days with you than I had in all the previous workshops combined. Your relaxed style and willingness to explain your own method of working was a revelation and even more so was the considerable time you spent with each participant improving their own technique and knowledge. I did not feel at anytime I could not ask for help and guidance and this was always forthcoming in a very understandable and constructive way.

The Aurora tours were great fun and provided the group with many varying images. Stunning sunsets like the one below over the South Iceland town of Vik. We had huge amounts of snow everywhere by the end of the second tour. We did get some aurora action too which was excellent.
Next year is already planned out and nearly booked up so places are limited for 2016. One left on each tour.

Ullapool and Assynt was as evocative as ever, wonderful place. The town of Ullapool should be visited at least once a year, the bars and people are just great. Everynight it seemed something different was happening. Usually with guitars and fiddles and singing, which suited me down to the ground:-), fantastic. O and the landscape is pretty special too!!

Snowdonia November 2014
Iv'e never known North Wales so warm in November! A great group, here we are up at Lyn Lydaw under Snowdon. We were all surprised and pleased that we had no rain. The conditions were challenging at times as we had to battle the grey cloud. The breaks, however, were fantastic.

The October Lakes workshops went well, slightly damp in places but the breaks in the weather were fantastic. Superb sunrises and a little mist that slowly cleared through the morning.
"I Just wanted to say a big thank you for the three days in the Lakes, I really appreciated your help and knowledge with the camera. I was also very impressed with your knowledge of the area and your ability to chose the right location for the differing conditions. Some of my images are way beyond what I thought I would achieve and I am so pleased with them".

Just back from the Scotland Grand Tour, following in the footsteps of the Victorian pioneers of adventure.The weather was amazing, again. Over the week I can't remember seeing a drop of rain! how bizarre is that, some days hitting 20 degrees. One of the group from Florida, almost thought it was home from home, although originally from Ireland. Staffa was awesome, perfect conditions and Harris and Lewis sublime.

A great tour this summer in Iceland, the weather as ever was excellent, a little rain but just what was needed on the black volcanic beaches of Dyrholaey. We covered a fair bit of ground even travelling to Hvitserkur.

The group on top of the classic Limestone Pavements of Yorkshire. We had a great time, excellent fun to be out shooting the landscape in sunshine. Only saw a smidgen of rain, even the low cloud was very good, just adding the right amount of mystery and atmosphere.

Black Clouds Hard Grit - The Dark Peak
Crikey, will it never stop raining? I can't remember a time when so many workshops have been spent dodging showers, or should I say, torrential rain?! Horrendous at times, no real chance to do anything but keep dry and have a brew.
The Lake District in January was very damp, some snow in the Central Fells but mostly rain.
When it wasn't raining, the wind blew! and did it blow on the Great Ridge in the Peak District. Wow, the gusts on top must have been approaching 60mph, very difficult to stand up,
let alone take photographs.
The only tactic was to keep low, very low!(see below)

Edinburgh at Night
We had a great day of weather, no rain in Edinburgh,a good clear sunrise over Calton Hill then off for a hearty breakfast. The rest of the day was spent around the City shooting the gorgeous architecture, finishing up with a sunset from the side of Arthur's Seat, fantastic way to end a day in Edinburgh, thanks everyone for attending.

Well it may have been August but I can't say it felt tropical, or anywhere near the Summer temperatures we would expect in August. We definitely saw rain but we still had an enjoyable time searching out those images and flashes of brilliance. Below is one of those fleeting moments captured by Steve Babb.

A Yorkshire Classic
Found the pot of gold in Yorkshire this Summer! it was in Swaledale!
Great light and conditions for the Dales and Coast tour. The rain even held off when we walked up over the Limestone pavements at Twistleton. The coast provided some amazing clouds too at Staithes and Saltburn. Even found time to have a cuppa at me Auntie's Farm just outside North Allerton, a super location just sit back with a brew, watching Curlew and Lapwing, superb.

My annual trip out to Big Sky County was very rewarding. A super place for photography and painting. Most of my favourite painters I grew up reading about, like Edward Seago are from this part of our sunny Isles. If you like clouds, as us photographers should do, then head to Norfolk. We had some excellent conditions for birdwatching and wafting the long lens. Marsh Harrier abound, after a few years you get to know there locations and flight patterns on this part of the coast, wild Barn Owl were also excellent. I put wild as no tethered birds were used in the making of the images. It was so good I may go back in November, so if anyone fancies some cracking bird photography, me with a pair of binoculars shouting out the birds for you to shoot, then watch this space or just drop me an email.
Northumberland April Tour
Sometimes you just can't believe how cold it can be standing on a beach, in April! Ok, I was wearing a Hawaiian shirt and flip flops, but even so?! Is this winter never going to end? We all had a great time in Northumberland but the wind whipping in off the North Sea was definitely icy. I don't think it got above 0 degrees all week, especially with the wind chill. It left us no choice on the Wednesday to go and get a cup of tea in front of the fire at Barter Books in Alnwick, best second hand bookshop in the land, perfect!

Isle of Skye March Tour
The Cuillin Winter Sunset
We missed most of the snow again on the March Highlands tour, well at least on the roads. Plenty of snow on the mountains of Skye, a super tour, excellent moments of light. The late light at Elgol was stunning with a glorious cloud set, along with a superb sunset over the snow covered Cuillin.
It was a bit wild through the Borders and in the Lake District, 10ft drifts on some of the roads. Then just a short way down the road the snow had gone so it was very localised.
The wind in places was so strong it was picking up vans and caravanettes and just throwing them, literally into Loch Tulla!
Chinatown Neon Rain
A recent visit to London and the National Gallery saw my favourite street conditions. I had snow and rain within about an hour! Fantastic, the perfect time to photograph Chinatown at dusk, the lights just coming on and rain.
Isle of Skye and Highland Winter Tour January 2013
Not long back from the Highlands, I look forward with excitement to starting the year with a workshop in Scotland, its always an absolute classic. Amazingly we missed most of the heavy snow that was dropped!. The whole of the country came to a standstill as we kept ahead of the blizzard front. Setting off from the Lakes, got some stunning shots up Blencathra and Sharp Edge, which was a bonus.
Arriving on Rannoch Moor and Glencoe, we saw plenty of snow but thankfully the roads were clear. The stars of the Scottish snow plough brigade doing a great job keeping everything moving.
We also got some excellent light and conditions, Skye not failing to provide dramatic conditions and photography. Superb
Everyone had a great time, we even had a little time to work on the art of "Bimbling" some of us need more practice but Guy and Darren on the course have it down to a fine art!

Well the classic Autumn colours of the Lake District didn't let us down. We had some great light and gorgeous colours, even frost helping to bring out the riotous yellows and reds.

Ashley Jackson A Yorkshire Artist
I met up recently with one of my painting heroes Ashley Jackson. I used to watch his painting films 20 years ago. An outdoor person if ever there was one, I love his minimal approach to painting, perfectly encapsulating the atmosphere of a Yorkshire moorland. As he said to me "its easy to paint something, its difficult to paint nothing," Fantastic!
Something you should think about when composing an image, don't clutter it up with things that have no place there.
Iceland June 2012
Just back from Iceland, a great tour, and thank you to an excellent group. It made a fun experience, we had super weather too. Even got sunburnt on Langjokull glacier! (pictured on the monster truck day) The ten day tour just flew by! We crammed in quite a lot and with 24 hour daylight it was tricky to find time to sleep. The weather was so good we even did my favourite trip onto the Ice Lagoon in a boat, a gorgeous way to see the evening dusk and icebergs!

Isle of Skye February/March 2012
Well the first set of workshops for 2012 on the Isle of Skye are completed, a big thank you to everyone that attended. Great feedback from the photographers and what fantastic weather! Unbelievable! it kept getting better! a heatwave in March, the temperatures were up in the twenties everyday and mostly blue skies.
We had some great light at the end of February and early March with stunning breaks in the clouds, even on the way back from Skye to Glencoe on the Saturday, excellent. Everyone has a mass of editing to do which is great. A lot of the photographers have already booked there free day in my studio. We may have to stock up on more biscuits to cope with the amount of editing.

The Lakes in March were also amazing, I can barely remember the last time I saw Derwentwater so still in the middle of the day! Great sunrise on Walla Crag too on the Sunday morning, well done to everyone for walking up there, I think i'm still in shock from the weather!
